The Tekes River, the largest in Southeast Kazakhstan, originates within the country before crossing into China and returning as the Ili River. Along its course, it carves out unique geological formations, including the Tekes River Waterfall, located near the village of Saryzhaz. This impressive waterfall cascades into a natural basin, surrounded by lush alpine meadows, offering a pristine setting for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Tuzkol Lake, a high-altitude salt lake, is renowned for its breathtaking sunrise panoramas of Khan Tengri (7,010 m) and Pobeda Peak (7,439 m)—two of Kazakhstan’s highest and most iconic summits. While these snow-capped peaks may not always be visible due to weather conditions, strategic planning enhances the likelihood of experiencing this awe-inspiring view. Nearby, the Shalkode Valley features expansive alpine meadows and groves of Tien Shan spruce, creating a picturesque and tranquil landscape. The Shalkodesu River, which runs through the valley, is also known for its excellent Ottoman fish fishing opportunities.
The Ketmen Pass, situated at an elevation of 3,040 meters, serves as a critical link between the Shalkode and Ili River valleys, offering some of the most striking landscapes in the Almaty region. Accessible from mid-June to early October, the pass retains snow in shaded areas until early summer, adding to its rugged beauty. This remote and scenic mountain route is best explored with SUVs, allowing for stops at panoramic viewpoints along the way. As one of the most spectacular highland passes in Kazakhstan, Ketmen Pass promises an unforgettable experience for travelers seeking unspoiled natural beauty and off-the-beaten-path exploration.
